How net salary is calculated in Slovakia in 2026
Employee contributions are deducted from the gross salary first: 9.4% social insurance (sickness 1.4%, old-age pension 4%, disability 3%, unemployment 1%) plus 5% health insurance — 14.4% in total. The health contribution rose from 4% to 5% in 2026 as part of the fiscal consolidation package. Social contributions are capped at an assessment base of €16,764 per month; health insurance has no cap.
Gross salary minus contributions gives the tax base. A personal allowance of €497.23 per month (€5,966.73 per year) is deducted, and the remainder is taxed. From 2026 four progressive bands apply: 19% up to an annual tax base of €43,983.32, 25% up to €60,349.21, 30% up to €75,010.32 and 35% above that — each higher rate applies only to the slice above the threshold.
Parents can claim a child tax bonus: €100 per month for each child under 15 and €50 for each child aged 15–18. The bonus is capped as a percentage of the tax base (29% with one child up to 64% with six or more) and is tapered once the monthly tax base exceeds €2,286.
On top of the gross salary the employer pays contributions totalling 36.2%: 25.2% social insurance and 11% health insurance. The calculator therefore shows the employer's total cost of employment alongside the net salary.
Converting gross to net salary step by step
The conversion always follows the same order. The calculator does every step at once, but if you want to check the result by hand, work through it like this:
- Deduct employee contributions of 14.4% from the gross salary (9.4% social insurance and 5% health insurance).
- From what remains — the tax base — deduct the personal allowance of €497.23 per month if you claim it.
- Apply the tax rate for the band your adjusted tax base falls into to get the tax withheld.
- Add the child tax bonus if you are entitled to it. Net salary = gross − contributions − tax + child tax bonus.
Why net salary is lower in 2026 than the year before
The most common question after the January payslip is why the same gross salary produces a smaller payment. The reason is the employee health contribution rising from 4% to 5% of the whole gross salary. Employees with a disability pay 2.5% instead of 2%.
Part of that is offset by the higher personal allowance of €497.23 per month, which reduces the tax withheld. The offset does not cover the full increase, so the same gross salary yields a lower net salary in 2026 than in 2025.
Tax bands of 19–35%: who pays the higher rate
From 2026 four bands replace the previous two rates: 19%, 25%, 30% and 35%. A higher rate never applies to the whole income, only to the slice of the tax base above the threshold. An employee with a tax base of €45,000 a year therefore pays 25% only on the amount above €43,983.32 and 19% on the rest.
The 35% rate only reaches the part of the tax base above €75,010.32 a year. Most employees stay in the first band at 19% all year.
Personal allowance and the child tax bonus
The personal allowance is €497.23 per month and is claimed through a declaration filed with the employer — with only one employer at a time. It is applied in full to monthly withholding; any tapering at higher incomes is settled in the annual reconciliation or tax return. This is why two employees on the same gross salary can take home different amounts.
The child tax bonus of €100 per month for a child under 15 and €50 for a child aged 15–18 reduces the tax and, where it exceeds the tax due, raises the net salary beyond the ordinary calculation. Its size is capped as a percentage of the tax base according to the number of children.
Cost of employment: what an employee costs the employer
The cost of employment is what the employer actually spends on one job: the gross salary plus its own contributions of 36.2%. At the minimum wage of €915 gross the cost of employment is roughly €1,246, while the employee takes home roughly €728.90.
The gap between the cost of employment and net pay is useful in salary negotiations and when comparing an employment contract with other forms of engagement. The calculator therefore always shows it next to the net salary.

Frequently asked questions
How much are employee contributions in Slovakia in 2026?
14.4% of the gross salary in total: 9.4% social insurance and 5% health insurance. The health contribution increased from 4% to 5% on 1 January 2026.
What changed in the net salary calculation from 2026?
The consolidation package raised the employee health contribution by 1 percentage point and introduced four tax bands: 19%, 25%, 30% and 35%.
What is the personal tax allowance in 2026?
€497.23 per month, or €5,966.73 per year. It is tapered in the annual tax return once the annual tax base exceeds €26,083.13, but applies in full to monthly payroll withholding.
How much is the child tax bonus in 2026?
€100 per month for each child under 15 and €50 for each child aged 15–18. The bonus is capped as a percentage of the tax base and tapered at higher incomes.
What is the net minimum wage in Slovakia in 2026?
The minimum wage of €915 gross works out at roughly €728.90 net per month with the personal allowance applied.
Why does the same gross salary pay less in 2026?
The employee health contribution rose from 4% to 5% of the whole gross salary on 1 January 2026. The higher personal allowance of €497.23 per month reduces the tax withheld but does not offset the full increase.
Why do two employees on the same gross salary take home different amounts?
Usually because one has filed a declaration with the employer and claims the €497.23 monthly personal allowance while the other has not. The child tax bonus, disability status (2.5% instead of 5% health contribution) and the health insurance deductible allowance also make a difference.
Who pays the 35% income tax rate?
The 35% rate applies only to the part of the annual tax base above €75,010.32. Below that, rates of 19%, 25% and 30% apply by band — a higher rate is never charged on the whole income.
What does an employee cost the employer?
The cost of employment is the gross salary plus employer contributions of 36.2% (25.2% social insurance and 11% health insurance). The calculator shows it next to the net salary.
