How speed conversion works

The converter calculates through kilometres per hour. Between km/h and m/s the factor is 3.6 – multiply a speed in m/s by 3.6 to get km/h. That is why 10 m/s corresponds to exactly 36 km/h.

Miles per hour (mph) are used in the UK and US: 1 mph = 1.609 km/h, so the 70 mph motorway limit corresponds to roughly 113 km/h. A knot is one nautical mile per hour, i.e. 1.852 km/h – used in aviation and at sea.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km/h to m/s?

Divide the value by 3.6. For example, 90 km/h = 25 m/s. The other way: m/s × 3.6 = km/h.

How many km/h is 100 mph?

100 mph is 160.93 km/h. For a quick estimate, multiply miles per hour by 1.6.

What is a knot in km/h?

A knot (kn) is one nautical mile per hour = 1.852 km/h. A ship sailing at 20 knots moves at roughly 37 km/h.

Why does aviation use knots?

The nautical mile corresponds to one minute of arc of latitude, which simplifies navigation using charts and coordinates. That is why aviation adopted it too.
