This is an indicative calculation. The daily wage used for betegszabadság is simplified here from the annual salary (261 working days); in reality it may vary depending on the individual work schedule. It does not replace a ruling from the health insurer or professional payroll advice.
How Hungarian sick pay is calculated in 2026
The first 15 working days of sick leave per year are paid by the employer as betegszabadság, at 70% of the average daily wage (salary × 12 / 261 working days per year). These 15 working days correspond to 21 calendar days under a standard 5-day working week.
Once betegszabadság is exhausted, the health insurer takes over payment as táppénz for the remaining calendar days. The rate is 60% of the daily basis (salary / 30) with continuous insurance of at least 730 days, or only 50% otherwise or during hospitalisation.
Táppénz has a statutory daily cap of HUF 21,520 (twice the minimum wage divided by 30). Táppénz is also subject to 15% personal income tax (SZJA) with no further contributions — the calculator therefore also shows the amount after tax. Betegszabadság is taxed like regular salary.
The táppénz support period generally lasts a maximum of 1 year.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between betegszabadság and táppénz?
Betegszabadság is the first 15 working days of sick leave per year, paid by the employer at 70% of salary. Once that is used up, the health insurer takes over payment as táppénz.
Why is the táppénz rate sometimes 60% and sometimes 50%?
60% applies with continuous insurance of at least 730 days. With shorter insurance history or during hospitalisation, only 50% is paid.
What is the daily cap on táppénz in 2026?
HUF 21,520 per day (twice the minimum wage divided by 30). Above a gross salary of roughly HUF 1,076,000/month, táppénz no longer increases.
Is táppénz taxed?
Yes, it is subject to 15% personal income tax (SZJA) but no further contributions. Betegszabadság, by contrast, is taxed like regular salary.
What does hospitalisation mean for the amount of táppénz?
During hospitalisation, táppénz is paid at 50% of the daily basis regardless of insurance history.
