This is an indicative calculation that does not account for Sonderzahlungen (13th/14th salary), which in reality slightly increase Krankengeld. It assumes continuous employment with the same employer. It does not replace a ruling from the ÖGK or professional payroll advice.

How Austrian sick pay is calculated in 2026

The employer continues paying full salary (100%) for a period based on tenure with them: year 1, 6 weeks; years 2–15, 8 weeks; years 16–25, 10 weeks; from year 26, 12 weeks. This is followed by a further 4 weeks at half pay (50%).

During the 100% continued-pay phase, no Krankengeld is due from the insurer (ÖGK). During the 4-week 50% phase, the insurer tops up with half of the Krankengeld. Once continued pay is fully exhausted, the insurer pays the full Krankengeld.

Krankengeld is 50% of the daily Bemessungsgrundlage (gross salary / 30) up to day 42 of sick leave, and 60% from day 43. The Bemessungsgrundlage is capped at €6,930/month (€231/day).

Since continued pay lasts at least 6 weeks (42 days), the 60% Krankengeld rate applies almost always in practice — the 50% rate is only relevant in very specific cases outside this model.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks does the employer pay full salary?

Based on years of tenure: year 1, 6 weeks; years 2–15, 8 weeks; years 16–25, 10 weeks; from year 26, 12 weeks — always plus a further 4 weeks at half pay.

When does 50% versus 60% Krankengeld apply?

50% of the daily Bemessungsgrundlage up to day 42 of sick leave, 60% from day 43. Since continued pay lasts at least 6 weeks, Krankengeld is almost always paid at 60% in practice.

Are the first 3 days of sick leave paid?

Yes, for employees these are covered by Entgeltfortzahlung (continued pay) — Krankengeld itself would otherwise only start from day 4.

Do Sonderzahlungen (13th/14th salary) increase Krankengeld?

Yes, in reality the 13th and 14th salary are taken into account and slightly increase Krankengeld — this v1 calculator does not account for them, as a simplification.

What is the maximum Krankengeld?

The Bemessungsgrundlage is capped at €6,930/month (€231/day), from which the 50% or 60% rate is calculated.
